Adopting green practices means conserving resources and reducing waste and pollution. Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is by far the most recycled product in the nation with 80% of the HMA that is taken up each year finding its way back into roadways. For many years Dunn has had a successful "green strategy" that focuses on maximizing the use of recycled products. While most asphalt producers utilize only the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) to reduce usage of virgin liquid asphalt and aggregates, Dunn has been using RAP in conjunction with other recycled products. Currently, Dunn utilizes reclaimed roofing products, steel by products such as slag, and foundry sands in some of its mixes. Dunn's ability to find beneficial uses for these waste products reduces our need for natural resources and decreases landfill requirements in the community we share.
In addition to recycling Dunn's green strategy has involved participation in the development and implementation of more energy efficient roadways and asphalt products that can be produced with less energy and discharge less emissions. Both high performance cold mix and warm mix products can fill a useful need in this market. Because these products are produced at lower temperatures there is less fuel used to dry the aggregate and produce the product. As a result emissions released during production are decreased.
