One of Dunn's first large projects was the construction of a tunnel through Red Mountain. The 2,167 foot long tunnel was completed on time and for years served as the Birmingham Water Works Company's only means of piping fresh water from the Cahaba River into the young city.

As the automobile became an accepted mode of transportation, Dunn recognized the potential for road paving and opened one of the country's first asphalt plants in 1915. Highway construction is still one of Dunn's major businesses. The company has over 85 years of road building experience in the Southeast.

Dunn entered the ready mix concrete market in 1927, when it organized Mississippi Materials Company in Jackson Mississippi. Through acquisitions and mergers, MMC Materials has become the largest ready mix concrete supplier in Mississippi and has expanded operations into several surrounding states.

In 1940, Dunn expanded further by entering the general construction business. During the early years, most of its projects were for the military. Today, Dunn Buildings, LLC based in Birmingham, is involved in building projects in the commercial, industrial and institutional areas.

With principal offices in Birmingham, Alabama and Jackson, Mississippi, Dunn and its subsidiaries are among the largest and most diversified construction firms in the Southeast. Dunn serves the construction needs in road building, general construction, asphalt, ready mix concrete, and related products.

The Dunn Family Tradition
Founded in 1878 as the Dunn Brothers Construction Company by Evans and Thomas Dunn, Dunn Construction Company, Inc. is one of the oldest contracting companies in America. Evans Dunn became the sole proprietor of the company when his brother Thomas was killed en route to an early construction project. The company has been closely held ever since.

Only six presidents have served Dunn Construction Company, Inc. since inception. Four were members of the Dunn Family: Evans Dunn, William Dunn Sr., William Dunn Jr., and J.S.M. French, son in law of the late William Dunn Jr. Roger Bass, was the first non Dunn family member to be appointed to the position.  Currently Criag Fleming serves as President of Dunn Construction Company.
